I am also able to offer tuition for the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust competitions such as the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenges and the British Mathematical Olympiad. The rate I charge for these lessons is £50 per hour. Please browse below for advice and testimonials or contact me for more details.
Advice
The most important idea I can convey here is that ability to solve these questions is not a natural trait which some possess and others do not. Practising these questions frequently whilst not consulting solutions too soon is the key to success and if you enjoy these problems then it is worth putting in the time to achieve greater proficiency at them. If you have done well in a recent competition then achieving your goals in a later one can happen if you are able to practise enough. I recommend asking your school to enter you for later rounds even if you don't qualify for them after the earlier ones and try to prepare well in advance. For example, the interval between the Senior Maths Challenge and BMO Round 1 isn't really enough time to achieve your potential - I recommend that you request to sit BMO Round 1 and spend several months or even longer preparing for it.
Testimonials
All of my three children have been tutored by David. My eldest two were tutored in order to help them when they were struggling at school, whereas my youngest is being tutored because he wants to be pushed further as a gifted mathematician.
David is an enthusiastic and talented tutor and has resulted in all three children flourishing in this subject. My youngest (13 years old) is an enthusiastic mathematician and David has successfully mentored him through his Intermediate Senior Maths Challenge, in which he achieved a Silver Award.
I would strongly and unhesitatingly recommend David as a maths tutor.
David is an extremely knowledgeable mathematics teacher with a great command of BMO style questions and teaches really well in a clear, concise and efficient manner. I really enjoyed learning from David and would recommend him to anyone who wants to understand the greater intricacies and complexities of maths.
David provides an overall professional service, encompassing first class education support, time keeping, consistency, very open honest fee build up and adequate parent reporting. This overall professionalism has resulted in my wife becoming relaxed (an achievement in itself), a son that has become reasonably self sufficient and improving in confidence and as a result achieving Silver in the UK Junior Mathematical Challenge.
What more could you ask?
David is an excellent teacher, and puts a lot of effort into every lesson, making sure every second is used to its fullest extent. He has helped me excel in both the BMO and the STEP, while making sure I truly understand the maths every step of the way.
